Monel 400 is a single phase solid solution Ni-Cu alloy, which has good corrosion resistance in many media environments. It has good corrosion resistance from slightly oxidizing medium environment to neutral environment and suitable reducing environment. This alloy has a long history of being used as an corrosion resistant material. In the early 20th century, attempts were made to smelt the alloy from nickel ore with a high concentration of copper, and today's Monel 400 contains a similar proportion of nickel to copper. As with commercial pure nickel, the strength of Monel 400 in the annealed state is very low, and for this reason the material is often tempered to improve its strength.
